Can Rabbits Eat Bananas? Fruit, Peels and Safe Portions
How we researched this guide: In November 2026 we checked every fact in this article against the House Rabbit Society, Rabbit.org, the RSPCA and a vet-reviewed feeding guide. Anything we could not verify, we left out. See our editorial policy. Last reviewed: November 2026.
Quick answer: Yes, rabbits can eat bananas, but only as a small, occasional treat. The House Rabbit Society lists banana as a treat fruit with the peel removed. Bananas are high in sugar, so think a thin slice, not a chunk, and never every day.
Are Bananas Safe for Rabbits?
Bananas aren’t toxic to rabbits. The House Rabbit Society includes “Banana (remove peel)” on its list of treat fruits, the RSPCA names bananas as an example of a fruit treat, and the San Diego House Rabbit Society lists banana among rabbit-safe fruits in small portions.
The catch is sugar. Rabbit.org calls bananas a “high glycemic” fruit that should be used only as an occasional treat. A rabbit’s gut is built for hay and greens, and too much sugar can upset the balance of microbes in the gut, leading to soft stools, gas or diarrhea.
How Much Banana Can a Rabbit Eat?
Less than most people expect. Here is what the guidance says:
- House Rabbit Society: all fresh fruit together should be no more than about 1 teaspoon per 2 lb of body weight per day.
- San Diego House Rabbit Society: offer fruit once or twice a week, with a portion such as a ¼-inch slice of banana.
- Chewy’s vet-reviewed guide: about 1–2 teaspoons of fresh banana, once or twice a week, for most healthy adult rabbits.
In practice, that means a thin coin of banana a couple of times a week. If you give banana that day, skip other fruit.
Can Rabbits Eat Banana Peels?
It’s best not to. The House Rabbit Society says to remove the peel. Chewy’s vet-reviewed guide notes that banana peel isn’t known to be toxic to rabbits, but there is no real reason to feed it. Peels can also carry pesticide residue, so the safest habit is to peel the banana and offer only the fruit.
Dried Banana and Banana Chips
Skip them. Drying concentrates the sugar, and banana chips are often fried or sweetened. The RSPCA lists sugary human foods among the things rabbits should avoid.
Can Baby Rabbits Eat Bananas?
No. Young rabbits have sensitive digestive systems. Rabbit.org advises waiting until about 12 weeks before introducing vegetables at all, and fruit should come after that. Ask your vet before giving fruit to a young rabbit. Our baby Angora rabbit guide covers what kits should eat.
How to Give Your Rabbit Banana Safely
- Peel the banana and cut a thin slice, about ¼ inch thick.
- Offer it by hand or use it as a training reward.
- Introduce it on its own, then wait 24 hours and check droppings before trying another new food.
- Stop if you see soft droppings, and don’t give fruit to a rabbit that isn’t eating hay normally.
Bananas are a treat, not a meal. Most of your rabbit’s diet should be hay, with leafy greens and a measured amount of pellets. See our guide to the best food for Angora rabbits, and compare other fruits such as apples and grapes.
Please note: This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If your rabbit has soft droppings, stops eating or stops pooping, contact a rabbit-savvy vet straight away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can rabbits eat bananas every day?
No. Bananas are high in sugar and Rabbit.org recommends them only as an occasional treat. Once or twice a week, in a small portion, is enough.
How much banana can I give my rabbit?

Can rabbits eat banana peels?
The House Rabbit Society says to remove the peel. Peel is not known to be toxic, but it offers no benefit and may carry pesticide residue.
Can rabbits eat dried bananas or banana chips?
